Ancascocha An Alternative Trek to Get to Machu Picchu

The Classic Ancascocha & Machupicchu Trek

The Ancascocha trek to Machu Picchu is one of the lesser known routes and is much less traveled than many others. One of the lesser known routes to the incredible Machu Picchu is the Ancascocha trail. It is much less crowded than others tourist walks, and not many people travel along the route. In fact, not many companies offer the tour because it is very out of the ordinary.

Ancascocha Trek also known as the Hidden Inca Trail or the Super Inca Trail, is a less traveled and strenuous trek. If you’re looking for trails off the beaten track, untouched nature, and a challenging hike, this is for you! National Geographic recently named the Ancascocha Trail one of the 20 best hikes in the world.

On the trek from Ancascocha to Machu Picchu, the trail crosses very remote Andean communities, where the locals try to continue living happily moving their llamas and alpacas as they have done until now. This trail is part of the network of the classic Inca Trail that connects Machu Picchu with the other towns located in the mountains, therefore, we will have the opportunity to witness ancient Inca ruins along the way to Machu Picchu, Inca ruins that are still keep. covered by bushes waiting to be discovered by you.

Highlights of the trip to Machupicchu with Ancascocha:

  • The Ancascocha trek, also known as the Hidden Inca Trail or the Super Inca Trail, is a less traveled trek. If you are looking for off the beaten track, untouched nature and a challenging hike, this is the one for you! National Geographic recently named the Ancascocha Trail one of the 20 best hikes in the world!
  • The best local tour guides who teach you about various ancient Inca ruins, wander through remote farms where generations of farmers have tended their cattle, and pass traditional Andean towns like Chillipahua and Ancascocha. But of course, the real reason to go on this hike is for the unrivaled views of the majestic Andes.
We will see spectacular views across the mountains, beautiful clear blue lakes and raging waterfalls, and with the towering 6,266 m (20,551 ft) Apu Salkantay frequently dominating the horizon.
  • On our third day of trekking we will be on a part of the Classic Inca Trail (the one that is reserved a year in advance!) After 2 days of solitude, you may be surprised to see so many other trekkers; But don’t worry, they’re going in the other direction!
  • From the sacred valley city of Ollantaytambo we will take the panoramic train to Aguas Calientes, which is the base of our trip to Machu Picchu. The train ride itself is a fantastic experience and full of photo opportunities.

Activities of Ancascocha + Inca Trail to Machupicchu:

Ancascocha Trek is very strenuous and challenging due to the increase in altitude, the 7 steep summits and the length of the trek: 56 km / 34.8 miles and climbs to 4,959 m / 16,270 ft. But to be rewarded with incredible views doesn’t come without effort, we recommend that everyone who joins us have a good level of fitness. Be prepared for all kinds of weather changes, since in the Andes it can rain, snow or hail at any time. That is why we recommend wearing good trekking gear, such as walking shoes, jackets, and pants.
