FAQs Frequently asked questions of our travelers

The famous Salkantay Trekking was recently named among the 25 best treks in the world. It connects the imperial city of Cusco with Machu Picchu, this being an ancient and remote Inka trail located in the same region as the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, where huge snow-capped peaks collide with lush tropical forests. It is located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cusco in south central Peru by the Cordillera de Vilcabamba at 6,271 meters above sea level (20,574 feet).

Salkantay is a glacier whose summit is worshiped for thousands of years by the Peruvian Indians. Salkantay or Salcantay The name is a Quechua word that means “wild mountain“. The Salkantay trek is designed as an alternative route to the traditional classic Inca Trail. Off the beaten path, this is a cutting-edge experience for adventure-seeking travelers with a little more privacy and authenticity on tour. With more spectacular views of mountains, snow-capped mountains, lakes, rivers, nature of flora and fauna, the trek offers a great variety of climates and microclimates which will be difficult to forget the travel to Salkantay.

THE MOUNTAIN RANGE OF VILCABAMBA IN SALKANTAY:

It is characterized by high and rugged terrain, forming snow-capped mountains that exceed 5,000 meters above sea level, highlighting the Nevado Corihuayrachina at 5,404 meters above sea level, the Nevado de Salkantay with 6,264 meters above sea level, with watery crests and irregular flanks from steep to very steep slopes. Lithologically it is made up of the oldest and most deformed rocks in the region. The upper parts of the snow-capped peaks correspond to the most prominent elevations and exhibit slopes that sometimes produce avalanches – Oki doki Operator.

In the Cordillera de Vilcabamba there are two chains of snow-capped mountains:

SALKANTAY – CORIHUAYRACHINA SNOW CAP CHAIN Located SE of the Cordillera de Vilcabamba – Cusco – Peru, made up of the snow capped mountains: Salkantay (6,264 masl), Corihuayrachina (5,404 masl), Palkay (5,422 masl), Ampay (5,418 masl), Tucarhuay ( 5,910 masl), Huamantay (5,473 masl) and Padreyoc (5,771 masl. Sacsarayoc – Pumasillo Snowcapped Chain, E-W direction, located in the central part of the Cordillera de Vilcabamba, made up of the Sacsarayoc (5,994 masl), Pumasillo (5,104 masl) and Choquetacarpo (5,512 masl) with glacier coverage. Evolution and distribution of glaciers in the Salkantay chain: Currently, the glaciers that belong to Aobamba are concentrated around the Palkay (5,422 m.), Salkantay (6,264 m.) and Tokorhuay (5,473 m.) hills, the same ones that evidently continue to lose extension and volume year after year. In the In the last thirty years, the rate of glacial melting has increased rapidly, attributing the causes of this event to the effects of the greenhouse phenomenon – Cusco – Peru.

Information about the Salkantay Group – Cusco – Peru:

Salkantay with 6,264 m. high, it is the most important snow-capped mountain of the Vilcabamba mountain range and occupies the southern position of the Aobamba valley basin. The Sisaypampa, Orcospampa and Paccha Grande streams are born from its slopes. In 1963, five main glaciers belonging to the Aobamba river basin were inventoried, located on the northern side of the mountain and oriented to the Northeast and Northwest. Of these, four correspond to the mountain type and one to the valley type. At present, the lower edge of the Salkantay glacier area is at ± 4800 masl, and due to the accelerated deglaciation process, this level will continue to rise in the coming years. In order to obtain data that will allow in the future to know more exactly the behavior of the glaciers in the area, we have seen that annual topographic controls can be carried out on the existing glacier front in the upper part of the Salkantay lagoon, recommending for reasons of security, having the services of high mountain guides for demarcation tasks; the fixed rock points that should serve as the basis for these measurements may be located on the right bank of the Salkantay lagoon. (EGEM S.A. 1999: p. 10).
