Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu FAQ’s

What is the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?

The Salkantay Trek, or Salkantay route, is an alternative to the famous Inca trail to reach Machu Picchu. It is a somewhat harder path, since it includes a pass of 4,600 meters above sea level, but it is more scenic and does not require a permit or a professional guide. It is perfectly possible to do the Salkantay route on your own.

How long is the Salkantay trek?

The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu has approximately 72 kilometers that are completed on the trip, preferably, in 5 days and 4 nights of trekking to the Salcantay. Or it could also be done in 4 days and 3 nights of walking to Salcantay. The last day of the trip corresponds to the visit to Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes (Pueblo de Machupicchu).

How is the travel time on the Salkantay trek?

Travel weather is generally pleasant during the day, even hot, and cool at night. The temperature can drop below 0°C at some points, especially the first night. The best time to do the Salkantay trek is from May to September, when it is cooler but there is less chance of rain. The rainy season is from December to March.

    Is the Salkantay trek difficult?

Does not exist. The path to Salcantay does not have any technical difficulty, it is signposted and all kinds of specialized people do it. But it is hard, you have to walk a lot and at a high altitude in mountains and snow-capped mountains, so there is a risk of suffering from altitude sickness. It is important to go prepared, acclimatize and, as always, adapt to the weather before making the salkantay trek trip.
