FAQs - The Classic Rainbow Mountain in Group Service full day
â Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Everything You Need to Know Classic Rainbow Mountain – Vinicunca
1) Is the Classic Rainbow Mountain hike difficult?
Actually, the terrain is not technically difficult (mostly gradual inclines), but the altitude is the real challenge. Walking at 5,029 meters makes every step feel twice as heavy. It is considered a medium-to-high difficulty trek due to the thin air.
2) What is the best time to visit Vinicunca?
The best time is during the dry season (April to October) when the skies are clear and the colors of the mountain are most vibrant. However, the mountain is open year-round, though you should expect snow or rain from December to March.
3) Can I see the Red Valley on this tour?
Yes, our Classic Rainbow Mountain Group Service allows for an optional detour to the Red Valley, depending on the group’s overall pace. This surreal landscape looks like the planet Mars and is located just behind the main rainbow ridge.
4) Are there bathrooms on the trail?
Fortunately, the local community has installed basic toilet facilities at the beginning of the trek and at certain points along the route. We recommend carrying your own toilet paper and a small coin (approx. 1 or 2 Soles) for the maintenance fee.
5) Is there an age limit for this trek?
We donât have a strict age limit, but we recommend it for people between 10 and 60 years old. Notably, children and seniors should have previous experience with high-altitude hiking and be in good physical condition.
6) How can I prevent altitude sickness (Soroche)?
First and foremost, we recommend staying in Cusco for at least 2 days before the trek. Drink plenty of Coca tea, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy meals or alcohol the night before. Our guides also carry emergency oxygen for your safety.
7) Are horses available for rent during the hike?
Yes, if you find the ascent too difficult, you can hire a horse from local villagers at the start of the trail. The cost is usually between 60 to 90 Soles ($15 – $25 USD). Please note this is a private arrangement between you and the horse owner.
8) What kind of food is provided on the tour?
Our Classic Rainbow Mountain Group Service includes a buffet breakfast and a buffet lunch in the town of Cusipata. We offer vegetarian and vegan options upon request. Undoubtedly, these meals are designed to give you the energy needed for the trek.
9) What should I do if it starts raining or snowing?
The weather in the Andes is unpredictable. Therefore, we always recommend bringing a waterproof poncho or jacket. If the weather becomes dangerous (lightning or heavy blizzards), our expert guides will prioritize your safety and may adjust the itinerary.
10) Do I need professional hiking boots?
While sneakers can work if they have good grip, we strongly suggest wearing professional hiking boots. The trail can be muddy or slippery, and ankle support is crucial for the uneven terrain leading to the Vinicunca Pass.
11) How many people are in the group service?
Our shared groups typically consist of 15 to 20 participants. This allows for a social atmosphere while ensuring that our professional guides can provide personalized attention and safety monitoring for every hiker.
12) Is there mobile phone signal at the mountain?
Interestingly, there is very limited to no signal at the summit. You might get some reception in the town of Cusipata, but once you start the hike, expect to be disconnected. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the nature of the Andes!
Excursions and trips to the rainbow mountain Vinicunca, also known as the rainbow mountain or the Seven Color Mountain, has established itself as one of the great tourist attractions in Peru by receiving visitors every day in high season, assured the Regional Directorate of Tourism (Dircetur) of the region of Cusco â Peru. The multicolored mountain has increased its popularity in recent years to attract a third of the visitors who arrive daily at the ruins of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, also in Cusco, the main tourist attraction in Peru with 4,000 national and foreign visitors to the day.
Why is it called Cerro Winikunka?
Since before, it has always been known as the Winikunka hill, which in Quechua means âHill with colored stones in the shape of a neckâ. The colors are due to the presence of minerals that are located from the bottom of the earth to the surface and that somehow nature has managed to preserve.
Today it is designated as Cerro Vinicunca, Vinicunca Mountain or Mountain of the Seven Colors. They are hills (or mountains) that correspond to the Andes mountain range in Peru and are close to the snowy Ausangate (6,372 masl), there is a sign for tourists âWellcome to the mountainsâ that welcomes the Pitumarca district. Its slopes and mountain tops are tinted by strips of intense shades of fuchsia, turquoise, lavender and gold. Due to climate change and the melting of the Vilcanota mountain range, the geological wonder that is unparalleled in the world is exposed. My family is from the city of Sicuani, capital of the province of Canchis, I remember having heard in my adolescence that there were mines in these colored hills, even my father as a lawyer, in the 1940s, advised some of them at the beginning of their training. local communities: Machupitumarca, Pampachiri and others. Upon reaching Vinincunca, from the viewpoint, where the view is 360Âș, it is observed that the hills continue to have colors, calling the attention, for its chromatic diversity, the variety of pigmentation of all the strong tones. It is truly a surreal landscape, writes Ălvaro Ra,: âIt is like being in front of a drawing that seems to burn like lava on its undulating slopes, obscuring the glare of the sun and its celestial atmosphere, which received the name of Mountains of the Seven Colors or Rainbow montain. It is observed that the color blue does not exist because it would be in the sky.
Talking with locals between the ages of seventy and eighty, they refer to the existence of these hills, they were always covered by clouds and snow and the existence of intense cold made them unvisitableâ. In 2007, the province of Quispicanchis, regarding the Ausangate area, carried out âecological economic zoning studies that concluded âthere are areas assigned to ecological protection and it is recommended that they be excluded from uses incompatible with their characteristics.â The district of Pitumarca â CANCHIS province â carried out âeconomic ecological microzoningâ studies in the area where the Seven Colors Mountain (or RAINBOW MOUNTAIN) is located, warning of the vulnerability of the zonal ecosystem. Since 2009, the Ausangate area, Just as 35 areas of Cusco processed to be declared âRegional Conservation Areasâ, before the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET) remaining, six years stuck by the state bureaucracy in the Peruvian government. On the other hand, the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) responded by saying that Ausangate did not meet âthe requirements requested in the directive and, therefore, said mining requestâ did not overlap any Natural Protection Area established by the government of Peru and that an area tourâ.
