🏔️ Detailed Places of Interest & Route Highlights

To provide you with a deeper understanding of your journey to The Humantay Lake in Private Service, here is an overview of the iconic locations we will explore together. Each stop is carefully timed to ensure exclusivity and comfort.

1. Mollepata: The Gateway to the Andes (2,900 m / 9,514 ft)

First, we arrive at the picturesque village of Mollepata. Unlike standard tours that rush through, our private service stops here for a gourmet Andean breakfast. This location is crucial for your body to begin adjusting to the altitude. Furthermore, this is where we handle all administrative details, such as the community entrance fees, so you can focus entirely on the scenery – private service.

2. Soraypampa: The Majestic Base Camp (3,900 m / 12,795 ft)

After a scenic drive through winding mountain roads, we reach Soraypampa. This is the starting point of our trek and offers a breathtaking view of the Salkantay and Humantay glaciers. Notably, in our private service lake, we arrive here before the large tourist caravans. This timing allows you to prepare for your hike in a peaceful environment, surrounded only by the silence of the mountains and the crisp Andean air.

3. Humantay Lake: A Turquoise Masterpiece (4,200 m / 13,779 ft)

Undoubtedly, the crown jewel of the day is the Humantay Lake. After a personalized trek—where your guide adjusts the pace to your comfort—you will witness the emerald-turquoise waters reflecting the hanging glaciers above.

Because we depart Cusco earlier than most, you will have ample time for professional-grade photography and quiet meditation at the shore. Your private guide will also share the spiritual significance of this “Apu” (sacred mountain) in Inca mythology with private service.

4. The Salkantay Perspective

Additionally, during the descent, you will have a unique vantage point of the Salkantay trail,, Soraypampa one of the most famous trekking routes in the world. Being in a private service means we can stop at specific “miradores” (viewpoints) that larger buses cannot access, giving you a 360-degree view of the Vilcabamba mountain range.

5. Return via Limatambo Valley

Finally, as we head back to Cusco, we pass through the lush Limatambo Valley service private.

In contrast to the morning drive, the afternoon light illuminates the agricultural terraces and fruit orchards of the region. This relaxing drive is the perfect conclusion to an intense day of adventure, ending with a comfortable drop-off directly at your hotel door.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs Frequently asked questions of our travelers  Humantay lake private day tour

1. What is the real benefit of a private tour versus a group tour?

First of all, exclusivity translates into time. In a shared tour, schedules are subject to the punctuality of 15 or 20 other people, which often causes delays. In contrast, when booking a private service, the itinerary is strictly adjusted to your needs.

Furthermore, private transportation allows you to make photographic stops in the Limatambo Valley that large buses simply ignore. In short, you are not just buying a transfer, but the freedom to enjoy the landscape without the noise of the crowds, guaranteeing a more intimate connection with nature.

2. How does altitude affect me and how does a private service help?

The lake is located at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. At this altitude, the human body perceives about 40% less available oxygen. For this reason, the pace of the hike is crucial.

While in group tours the guide must follow an average speed, in a private service your guide monitors your oxygenation and heart rate personally. In fact, we carry portable oxygen tanks for the exclusive use of your group, ensuring that any symptoms of altitude sickness are addressed immediately.

3. What time does the private tour start and end?

Generally, the pickup from your hotel in Cusco is scheduled for 4:30 AM. Nonetheless, being a private service, we can move the departure up to 4:00 AM. This strategic adjustment aims to reach Soraypampa before the large bus caravans arrive.

The return to Cusco is usually around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM. It is worth noting that, unlike the standard service, you won’t have to wait to drop off 15 other passengers at their respective hotels; you will be the first and only one taken directly to your door.

4. What exactly is included in a premium one-day service?

A high-quality private service must be comprehensive. Specifically, we include:

  • Transport in a modern SUV or van (not shared minivans).

  • Professional bilingual guide specialized in high mountains.

  • Gourmet breakfast and lunch in exclusive campsites.

  • Carbon fiber trekking poles.

  • First aid kit and oxygen.

Consequently, you only worry about walking and enjoying, while we handle all the safety and food logistics.

5. Is the hike suitable for children and seniors?

This is a common question, and the answer is: it depends. However, thanks to the flexibility of a private tour, the possibilities increase. We have taken children as young as 7 and seniors in good physical condition.

The key lies in the use of horses and the guide’s patience. Without the pressure of a fast-moving group, seniors can take frequent breaks. Therefore, if you have doubts about your physical capacity, the private service is the only responsible option to try it.

6. What kind of food is served on a private tour?

Unlike massive buffets where food is often cold, in the private service we prioritize freshness. For example, our lunches usually include organic ingredients from the Sacred Valley, vegetarian or vegan options prepared on the spot, and constant hot drinks to fight the Andean cold.

Likewise, we ensure that hygiene in preparation is impeccable, minimizing any risk of stomach upset during the rest of your trip through Peru.

7. What is the essential gear I should bring?

Even though we provide trekking poles, it is vital that you come prepared. Accordingly, we recommend:

  1. Footwear: Mountain boots with ankle support (crucial to avoid sprains).

  2. Clothing: The “onion” system (layers). A thermal layer, a fleece, and a windproof/waterproof jacket.

  3. Accessories: Gloves, wool hat, and spare socks.

Keep in mind that at Humantay Lake, the weather can change from radiant sun to a hailstorm in less than 20 minutes. Being prepared is the difference between an epic photo and an uncomfortable experience.

8. How do the landscapes of Humantay compare to the Rainbow Mountain?

Many travelers wonder which one to choose. While Rainbow Mountain stands out for its mineralogy, Humantay offers a classic alpine landscape: glaciers, glacial lakes, and unique “puna” vegetation.

From a photographic standpoint, Humantay is more generous due to its contrasts of white (snow), green (mountains), and turquoise (water). In addition, the physical effort is slightly less than in Vinicunca, making it ideal as “preparation” for the Inca Trail.

9. Is there cell phone signal or internet on the route?

It is important to clarify that once we pass the town of Mollepata, the signal becomes null or very unstable. Therefore, this trip is the perfect opportunity for a “digital detox.”

Nevertheless, your private guide has communication radios for emergencies. In conclusion, you will be offline for Instagram for a few hours, but totally safe and communicated under internal protocols.

10. What is the cancellation policy and weather flexibility?

We understand that plans can change. In our private service, we offer more flexible cancellation policies than mass tours. On the other hand, if the weather on the mountain is extremely dangerous, we have the ability to reschedule your departure for the next day without losing the logistics, something impossible in group services.

11. Is any special permit or entrance fee required?

Indeed, an entrance fee must be paid to the Mollepata community. However, in our private service, this cost is already included and the guide handles the paperwork. In this way, we avoid unnecessary lines and speed up the entry to the Soraypampa area.

12. Why book in advance and not in Cusco upon arrival?

Certainly, you could find last-minute offers in the Plaza de Armas. But, the best guides and the safest vehicles are booked weeks in advance. Especially in a private service, personalization requires prior planning of supplies and qualified staff.

¡A walk of how to get to Lake Humantay – Cusco Tour Operator? Salkantay trrkking Uitstekende!! Gracias x tan maravillosa experiencia Okidoki!! Gracias Al!!!

My partner and I booked the 3N/4D Salkantay Trek with Okiodoki and let me tell you – we had the best time. First of all: The Staff was amazing, very kind and super helpful. Alvaro (together with his wife Rosmary owners of Okidoki) replied within minutes to all our questions via whatsapp. A few days before the trek he welcomed us in his office, explained the tour in details and helped me getting over my fear, that the trek might be to hard for me (needless to say: all went perfectly fine and it wasnâ€t as hard as I thought). They provided me with hiking poles (30 PEN for the 4 days) and in addition they lent me a daily backpack for free. All the material (duffle bag, sleeping bag, daily backpack) was in perfect condition and the sleeping bag really kept us warm during the cold night at the foot of the Salkantay. Our guide, Guilleromo, was probably the main reason why we had such good time. He timed the whole trip very well without being too pushy. That means, that everything went as it should and we always met our daily goal according to the timetable. Guilleromo is very kind and helpful. He made sure to keep us safe on the trip and inriched us with his profond knowlege of plants, the mountains, the indigenous community and the incas. Overall you could feel his passion for the nature, the mountains and the local cultur. We couln’d have wished for a better guide. Thank you so much Guilleromo! Our chef, Roger, prepared delicous meals, which were always right on time. The table was brautifully set and our special needs (vegetarisn or allergies) were always met. Also, the breakfast was a lot richer than I exprected and every day we got something new to try. Simon, the owner of the three mules, also was very sweet and kind and always a helping hand to Roger and Guilleromo. He made sure that our duffle bags arrived on time and weâ€re still impressed how fast he managed to get from one campsite to the other! Second: compared to other tour companies, the groups at Okidoki are usually small. That allows you to get to know the participants in a more profond way. We happend to be a group of six people and the dynamic within the group was great. Third: the price-performance ratio is unbeatable. Of cours: don’t expect your trip to be luxurious. But keep in mind that you are doing a multiple day trip in the mountains and what they manage to offer, is already impressive. Particularly the first accomondation is very authentic and allows you to sleep under a sky full of stars with view on the salkantay. All accomondations are clean and youâ€ll have a good sleep. If itâ€s in your budget we would recommend to opt for the train to get back to cusco (costs arround 100 USD more). It only takes 4 hours (instead of 7h by van) and you wonâ€t have to walk additional 10km to the busstation after your visit to the Machu Picchu on your last day. After two hours train youâ€ll get picked up by a van/bus to complete your journey back to Cusco. Overall we would recommend to book a trip with Okidoki for all reasons above and of course the amazing experience of the Salkantay!

Our experience with OkiDoki was excellent - Alvaro's organization and booking skills were incredible and we even got to do 2 circuits within Machu Picchu on the 2D/1N Inca Trail rather than just one. He even made it so that it was just us on the tour which made it extra special! Our guide, Alcides, was truly exceptional and made the experience 10x better and personalised. I would definitely try to request him if you are doing the Inca Trail with OkiDoki. The lunch we were provided was extremely comprehensive and included many many snacks, so I would not purchase any snacks of your own before going, but definitely bring water! The hotel we were booked in Aguas Calientes + the included dinner was so-so, but for the price you cannot really complain! The only downside we had was that Alvaro was sometimes not great at communicating and his emails sometimes made it seem as though he did not full understand what you were saying. You are also meant to pay the remaining cost (bar the deposit) in-person in cash and we organized this, but Alvaro then began hassling us and saying we had not paid in time despite having a discussion with him about when we were going to pay! This made one of our days in Cusco very stressful and we were rushing our day to get back in time to pay Alvaro and once we did he was not even there and made us wait an extra 2h to turn up and accept the payment. Overall, despite this slightly negative experience, I would still recommend OkiDoki to visit Machu Picchu because of their organization, knowledge of the laws and ticket booking systems, and their database of guides (go Alcides!!!!). Just make sure to complete the payment ASAP when you get to Cusco to avoid issues!
