CHOQUEQUIRAO TREKKING ADVENTURE

The archaeological place of shockquirao comes to be considered as the last Inca city and one of the most beautiful and complete routes of Cusco but with a degree of difficulty (difficult and strong from 1 to 5 has the degree of difficulty)

In this tour we include an emergency horse or two depending on the number of people in the group

It is also considered as a non-tourist or commercial route, so the groups are small or private and the official departures of each month will be published or I could consult it on the web and also at the client’s choice if they want a private group.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs: Choquequirao Trek 5 Days (Classic Route)

1. What is the Choquequirao 5-Day Trek?

It is a challenging, off-the-beaten-path round-trip adventure that takes you deep into the ApurĂmac Canyon to explore the majestic, remote Inca city of Choquequirao (“Cradle of Gold”) before returning via the same trail to Cusco.

2. How difficult is the 5-day Choquequirao trek?

This trek is classified as physically demanding and advanced. It involves extreme changes in elevation, requiring you to descend thousands of meters into a massive canyon and climb back up steep switchbacks under warm temperatures.

3. What is the maximum altitude reached on this trek?

The highest point of this specific 5-day route is the Choquequirao campsite/archaeological complex, sitting at approximately 3,030 meters (9,941 feet) above sea level, and the Capuliyoc viewpoint at 2,915 meters. While lower than Cusco, the physical effort makes it intense.

4. How many kilometers do we walk in total over the 5 days?

You will hike a total of approximately 56 kilometers (35 miles) across varied terrain, including steep canyon paths, stone stairs, and mountain trails.

5. What should I expect on Day 1 (Cusco to Playa Rosalina)?

After an early departure from Cusco to Cachora, you will meet your muleteers, hike to the Capuliyoc viewpoint for your first look at the ApurĂmac Canyon, and make a long, steep descent down to Playa Rosalina (1,550 m) to camp by the river.

6. Is Day 2 really difficult because of the climb to Choquequirao?

Yes. Day 2 is one of the toughest days. You will ascend steeply from Playa Rosalina through Santa Rosa (2,990 m) to the Choquequirao campsite (3,030 m) under the warm sun, taking about 7 hours.

7. How much time do we spend exploring the ruins on Day 3?

Day 3 is dedicated to a full, immersive exploration of the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex with your expert guide, discovering its massive agricultural terraces, the famous Llama sector, and breathtaking mountain vistas.

8. Are condors really visible during the trek?

Yes! On Day 3, during your afternoon hike to the Marampata campsite, there is a very high probability of spotting Andean condors soaring over the canyon currents.

9. Why does the trek return via Marampata and Chiquisca instead of taking a shortcut?

Because this is a classic round-trip route, Days 4 and 5 retrace the path back out of the canyon, stopping at the scenic Marampata camp, descending to Playa Rosalina, and climbing out through Chiquisca and Capuliyoc back to Cachora.

10. What kind of physical preparation do I need?

You need an excellent level of physical fitness and stamina. We strongly recommend doing cardiovascular training (running, cycling, stair-climbing) and leg-strength exercises for at least 2 to 3 months before your trip.

11. Do I need to acclimatize in Cusco before starting?

Absolutely. We recommend spending at least 2 to 3 full days in Cusco (3,400 m) prior to the trek to allow your body to adapt to the high altitude and prevent altitude sickness.

12. When is the best time of year to do the Choquequirao 5-day trek?

The dry season, from May to October, is the ideal window. Skies are clear, and trails are stable. The rainy season (November to April) makes the canyon trails slippery, humid, and hazardous.

13. What is the accommodation like along the trail?

Accommodation consists of campsites managed by your trekking team. Tents are set up at designated spots like Playa Rosalina, Choquequirao, Marampata, and Chiquisca. Basic rustic toilets and cold showers are available at most sites.

14. Are mules and horses used to carry our equipment?

Yes. Pack mules (and horses) carry all group camping equipment, food, dining tents, and your personal duffel bags (up to a specific weight limit). You only carry a lightweight daypack with water, a rain jacket, and camera gear.

15. How does the trek end on Day 5?

After a 3 to 4-hour morning ascent from Chiquisca back up to the Capuliyoc viewpoint and Cachora, you will enjoy a celebratory lunch, board private transport, and begin your scenic bus ride back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.
