Essential Travel Guide: Original Inka Trail to Machu Picchu (4 Days)
Is the Inka Trail original 4-Day for professional hikers?
Let’s be completely straight with each other. Mountain climbing experience is not required to conquer the Original Inka Trail. Frankly, anyone with a passion for walking outdoors and discovering history thrives on this route.
Olympic stamina matters far less than letting your body get used to the altitude. Arriving in Cusco two or three days before stepping onto the trail remains totally non-negotiable for success.
What activities do you recommend for good acclimatization?
Sitting idly in a hotel room waiting out the hours wastes precious time. Keeping your body moving at a very relaxed pace during those opening days works wonders:
-
Day 1: Stroll easily around the historic center on a casual half-day city tour.
-
Day 2: Head out toward the Sacred Valley for fresh Andean air on a full-day excursion.
-
Day 3: Rest completely. Pack gear, test boots, and drop by our Oki Doki office right near the main square for a final chat with your guide.
What equipment is provided for this Original Inka Trail trip?
Sleeping under starry night skies should feel restorative rather than miserable. For this reason, all heavy camp gear comes fully included in our service. Thick inflatable mattresses, warm sleeping bags, and sturdy tents are provided by us so comfort is guaranteed.
What do the porters carry, and what do you need to carry?
Our amazing local crew takes care of the heavy lifting entirely. Carrying tents, cooking gear, dining tables, and food supplies is their domain.
Your personal load stays much lighter. Packing just a sleeping bag and a daypack with daily clothing layers is all that’s required. Extra luggage stays safely locked in Cusco.
What is the most difficult day on the 4-day Inka Trail original?
Day 2 delivers the ultimate test of endurance. Specifically, climbing up to 4,200 meters at Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusqa) pushes physical limits. Skipping rest days in Cusco invites severe altitude sickness, making prior preparation vital.
What is the recommended age for doing the 4-day original Inka Trail?
Children from 6 years old upwards join this adventure successfully. Naturally, a genuine love for walking outdoors is essential for them. Countless families have completed the trek with us by simply respecting those initial 4 days of calm pacing in Cusco.
When does the 4-day Inka Trail close?
Park authorities enforce one strict logistical rule every year. February marks the exclusive period when the original Inka Trail shuts down entirely for heavy rains, cleaning, and conservation work.
Important Travel Note for Your Visit to Machu Picchu
Should you add Machu Picchu Mountain or HuaynaPicchu Mountain after the Inka Trail?
Let’s talk frankly traveler-to-traveler. Extra mountain climbs offer alternative vantage points, but purchasing them is hardly mandatory.
Walking through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) on the morning of Day 4 delivers that classic postcard panorama instantly. Furthermore, after four grueling days of hiking, tired legs usually crave rest rather than another steep climb.
Deciding to take on the extra challenge means keeping specific details in mind:
-
HuaynaPicchu Mountain: This iconic steep peak sits right behind the ruins, demanding about 1 hour and 20 minutes of intense, vertical stair-climbing.
-
Machu Picchu Mountain: This higher summit offers wide panoramas over the whole sanctuary, requiring roughly 2 hours of steady uphill hiking.
